Can I Start A Trend?
November 12, 2007 by curellasays
I work in a costume, gift & decor shop called Seasons Express and even though halloween is over and I wasn’t invited to any cool halloween party and didn’t get to dress up, I have my heart set on this not quite costume like costume named “Dead Riding Hood”. I am buying the costume for the entire outfit itself and also for the pieces on their own. When I see this costume, I know that I can wear the cloak with a different dress, I can wear the dress with another jacket and I can wear the leggings and arm warmers with a different outfit.

Most of all however, I am buying because of the cloak. My colleague, a gothic chick owns a cloak herself and told me that she had got some nasty stranger comments when she wore her cloak. This is also one reason why I am reluctant to buy this outfit. I have no idea why chavs and townies have a problem with people thinking or dressing outside the box but I really think a cloak is versatile. Sure its very Lord of The Rings but if fashion designers can bring back the twenties into fashion again, why can’t we bring back the cloak?
I think it looks really adorable and never in a million years did I think a dead riding hood would dress like that. The satin dress could easily work as a tunic and look amazing with skinny jeans. I have to admit that the material isn’t brilliant and the sewing isn’t as wonderful as regular dresses are sewn like but what do you girls think? Is it nay or is it yay?
I love defying the norm and I love the cloak/cape with hood but if you think that its ridiculous and I should give up this thought, please let me know why. Speaking of cloaks or capes, I just remember them being worn in Miss Sixty’s Fall/Winter 2006/7 catwalk. It seem to look especially lovely with a strapless top (see second picture modelled by Irina Lazareanu)

So discuss, let me know what ya think!

I personally say yay to the cape but nay to the halloween outfit (I bet the material is awful). I think a cloak is a wonderful idea but I’d rather save up and invest in a pretty gothic one from those bespoke websites you get e.g. http://www.customcloaks.com. Only thing is they’re not the most modern of designs. I’m sure a cloak wouldn’t be too difficult to make- why not design your own?! I’m sure you could come up with something much more modern.
