Trophy Jackets
February 2, 2008 by curellasays
An article in March 2008’s Vogue revealed that “Trophy Jackets”, the equivalent of “IT. bags”, designer shoes and sunglasses will soon take centre stage again in 2008. I have always been an advocate for jackets and last year in 2007, I bought about 12 of them, that’s 1 jacket per month and probably worth a “Trophy Jacket” if I have saved all the money I have spent on these 12 jackets.
Its easy to just spend your money on a designer bag or shoe, but the jacket is something that requires more than a case of simple money. Do you possess the character to wear it, and does it suit your body shape? These factors ensures that only certain people can carry off the trophy jacket. As quoted in the article written by Harriet Quick, ”One woman’s trophy might not be another’s” which makes the acquisition even more pleasurable.” And that statement cannot be more true.
This Spring/Summer 2008 on the runway, we have seen a lot of distinctive trophy jackets with strict tailoring especially on Yves Saint Laurent. This pagoda shouldered sleeveless jacket for example is not something that I can carry off. It would take a strong and confident woman with a high powered job to do it justice.

One of my favourite jackets this Spring/Summer 2008 is this sheer and light-weight but still quite structured jacket by Alessandro Dell’Acqua, which I find more suitable to my personal style and character. Being petite, it would make me look like I have regular length legs with a dress that comes down to my knee worn under it.

And then of course there’s this ”americana” style jacket by Chanel which perhaps is the most memorable and recognisable trophy jacket of all the others this Spring/Summer. It is so distinct that I reckon I won’t be able to forget it for the rest of my life. This is the jacket that only very very few can carry off unfortunately. Its a good thing that it comes at a hefty price, I suppose.

Proenza Schouler has done one of the best jackets this season as well, in my opinion. This jacket (as shown below) is timeless but yet still quite modern with daring stripes that allows the border of the jacket to stand out even more, making the jacket look even more structured than it looks. If I were to invest my all my jackets money to a “trophy jacket”, this would probably be the one I would buy.

I believe it will take awhile before people start succumbing to the “trophy jacket” but as for me, my search for the “trophy jacket” starts now!

How could I forgotten Givenchy? They made some pretty amazing jackets too. This first one, that really reflects on the androgynous side of me.

Not sure if its a cape or its a whole dress in itself but I really like the idea of a decorative jacket like that for the summer. It would look so right with block coloured dresses or even with jeans and a strappy bubble shaped top.

And now this one is a bit trickier to pull it off. I’m sure we all know who in the blogosphere can find a way to do it though. I won’t name names! I just love the unpredictable style of this jacket. I wonder if it suits me… Is it a jacket, is it a skirt? No its a jackirt! lol.

And this last one is the one featured on the Trophy Jacket article on Vogue. You can clearly see why it was chosen. Its a classic, modern updated jacket and its the epitome of all trophy jackets.

But I still want to give this Balmain jackets some attention. It is ridiculously intricate, almost like a rebellion piece to the high street. How on earth can you copy this? This will definitely cost a fortune, and a good ol’ fortune it will be.

I worship Balmain.

I don’t have to buy a thing! I’ve got a closet full of excellent suits from years past. I actually started wearing the jackets on their own last year because I was so sad at the sight of those suits just hanging there.
I so love the Yves Saint Laurent jacket! It’s amazing!
The Proenza Schouler jacket looks great aswell!
Hey u have an excellent blog. Would u like to link?
God, I love the Proenza Schouler jacket!
And the Americano style one is cute - but so not something I could ever pull off!
