Skirting The Issue…
March 10, 2008 by curellasays
It seems quite clear to me that I need to invest in a few basic skirts as they will easily enhance the other clothes I have in my meagre wardrobe. I have spent the whole of yesterday ebaying, trawling through all sorts of shops (high end, vintage, second-hand, high street, etc) for the perfect skirt(s) that embody the qualities that I want before even thinking about buying it.
While most people struggle to find the perfect pair of jeans, I find it extremely hard to find a well-fitting and comfortable skirt in the style that I like. I absolutely avoid skirts with no elastic waistbands as most skirts tend to rise up when I walk - just imagine me walking and my skirt bobbing up and down, up and down, that’s what usually happens. If its not that then its the skirt moving itself around my waist when I walk - I can’t begin to tell you the number of ocassions when I found the zip of the skirt moving itself from the middle of the back to like almost to the side. Just thinking of that makes me frustrated!! (grrrrr!!!!)
American Apparel first came to mind when looking for skirts. The only skirt that I liked was sold out in my size (typical!) and the other skirts I kinda like, like the tulip skirt was made of some fabric used in tracksuit bottoms which I don’t like. Nothing else came up really and the only other perfect skirt I could find was on Net-A-Porter by Miu Miu.

Even though the rest of the skirts are lovely, the Miu Miu one is the only one with an elastic waistband. Skirts hate me don’t they?
This reminds me of a younger time (I was 13) when I used to wear a lot of skirts and when skirts used to fit me fine. I had this friend called Valerie and we hung out at her place after school all the time. We went to taekwondo lessons together, we even shared the same tuition teachers, basically we were very close then. One day she told me that her father doesn’t approve of me because of the skirts I wore. Apparently my knee length pencil skirt was too “revealing” (WTF!!) but being a naive 13-14 year old, I took that to heart and stopped wearing skirts totally. I felt so ashamed of my legs and was so afraid of giving people the wrong idea if my skirts were really “revealing”. Later, after finishing secondary school, I worked at a few places which required me to wear a skirt - but as you probably have guessed it, those skirts felt more uncomfortable than it ever had been.
All this probably explains my lack of skirt wearing. I still can’t wear pencil skirts and I feel repulsive while trying em in shops. My favourite kind of skirt these days however is one of those ripped looking, witchy type ones - and it must have a waistband! Topshop used to do loads but I couldn’t afford their prices back then. I long to find the perfect tulip skirt and A-line skirt someday. For now, I can only look.
On a happier note, I bought a pair of shoes instead!! I have wanted this pair of cut-out wedge heels ever since I saw it on Rumi of Fashion Toast. It wasn’t stocked at my local Debenhams (which stock Nine West shoes) and it had already sold out in my size on the only UK store online. I took the plunge and bought it last night - whilst I managed to get the shoes for half price, the Fedex shipping cost (the store only ships internationally via Fedex.) made em full price again. Hopefully it will be here in around 3 working days, after all I paid good money for postage!!
Rumi’s are in electric blue, but I bought mine in pewter. Frankly speaking, I had a hard time choosing between the bronze and this. I wish they made these in fuschia instead. This makes it the tallest pair of heels that I own. The main reason why I bought it is because of the wonderous reviews of how comfortable these are despite the height. Besides, I own another pair of Nine West platform heels (3.5 inches in height) and they were quite comfortable too.

I realise that I have quite a few pairs of T-bar heels now so its time to stop. Lol. I think a new pair of ankle boots should be next on my “to buy” list instead. I so cannot wait to get these, they will be perfect for the summer when I go to Spain for 10 days!

love em! wow there’s a story behind the skirts, he probably said that because you were young and must have looked pretty good! defo wear only what you’re comfortable in, i really like skater skirts because the waistbands are usually elastic but have a puffy shape.
I personally think there’s a skirt out there for every woman; it’s just about finding the cut that suits you. Love the grey Topshop one.
And the shoes are breathtaking; yum!
How awful that someone would tarnish your love of the skirt! (Adolescence is brutal, sometimes.) You know, I’ve found that the skirts wiggle around when they are too big and ride up when they are too small. Sometimes it’s really tricky - esp. with a short waist like mine, to get the perfect fit. But when I do, elastic or no, the waist stays put.
